Read from the ten-day cycle your day pillar (or year pillar) belongs to: the two branches the cycle never reaches are void.
By the sixty stem-branch cycle: the Jia-Zi cycle is void at Xu and Hai; Jia-Xu at Shen and You; Jia-Shen at Wu and Wei; Jia-Wu at Chen and Si; Jia-Chen at Yin and Mao; Jia-Yin at Zi and Chou.

In practice it reads as expectations falling through and effort being discounted. The classics also say a void palace suits quiet work, nominal posts and study; in practical terms, do not put all your resources in one place.
Used: it appears in chart conclusions and advice as a note that strength is reduced.

Does void mean nothing works?
No. The traditional handling is reduced strength rather than cancellation: whichever pillar it falls in is the area where effort counts for less.
Can the void be filled?
The tradition holds that when a luck cycle or annual year reaches that branch, it is filled and the strength returns.
